7 wildlife species you should look out for when in Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan is one of the country's best wildlife reserves, where people visit in large numbers every year to get the experience of being out in the wild. The safari drives here take you in the wild, offering you ample opportunities to drive alongside a variety of wildlife. And if you are lucky, you get to see the tiger wandering or hunting in its natural habitat. This place served as a former royal hunting ground , which has now turned into a haven for wildlife enthusiasts.

However, it’s essential to note that not everyone is lucky enough to spot tigers, which also doesn’t mean that other wildlife don’t warrant a mention. So, here are some wildlife species that you should look out for when in this national park.

Indian Leopard

Although more elusive than tigers, Indian leopards are also found in Ranthambore. They mostly tend to spend most of their time in the park’s rocky outcrops or dense vegetation, and like venturing out during dusk or dawn. Spotting a leopard is a rare but exciting experience for any wildlife lover.

Sloth Bear

Ranthambore’s rocky hills and dry forests make for ideal habitats for sloth bears. Characterised by their long claws and shaggy coats, these bears are mostly nocturnal but it’s possible to spot them during safaris, especially near the park’s termite mounds, where they forage for food.

Chital (spotted deer)

The chital, or spotted deer, is one of the most common herbivores in the park, and you would mostly find them walking alongside your safari jeep. Their striking appearance, with white spots on a reddish-brown coat, makes them easy to recognise. They are often seen grazing in herds, sometimes accompanied by langurs, who act as sentinels, alerting the deer to potential predators.

Sambar Deer

Larger and more solitary than the chital, sambar deer are another common sight in Ranthambore. With their dark brown coats and impressive antlers, these deer are often found near water sources and are a key prey species for tigers.

Nilgai

The nilgai, or blue bull, is the largest antelope in Asia and is frequently seen grazing in the grasslands of Ranthambore. Males have a bluish-gray coat, while females are lighter in color. Despite their size, they are surprisingly agile and can outrun many predators.

Indian Marsh Crocodile
