An unusual cat sanctuary amongst the ruinsWord to the wise: Don't be alarmed by the sheer volume of stray cats in the area. They are well looked after and have been vaccinated.
It was here that Julius Caesar met his bloody and violent end, stabbed by a group of senators on the steps of the Theatre of Pompey. But the square, with the ruins of the theatre and four Republican-era temples is today just as well known for its cat shelter.
Hundreds of stray cats strut and find refuge amongst the ruins and every day volunteers feed, clean and look after the homeless felines. The sanctuary hopes to find new homes for its cats but also offers an adoption at a distance scheme.
The square is a curious sight for another reason, namely that its ancient buildings sit in the middle of a busy transport hub.
