On the return journey to Hobart from Port Arthur, you should pause at this wildlife park. Clearly demonstrating that parks have come a long way from being cooped-up enclosures, Unzo, like most parks in these parts, has huge spaces for the endemic animals in its care. While seeking out the Tasmanian Devils, eastern quolls and bushtail possums, don’t neglect to notice the foraging echidnas and wombats along the way. There’s detailed information on the boards - that gets you to think more deeply about the natural world. It’s also worth factoring in some time to spend at the native botanical garden. Finally for the bird lover, over a 100 species of the birdie brigade have been identified. It’s a good idea to have a pair of binoculars, and the park checklist handy, in case you want to get a closer look at the remarkable scarlet robins and blue wrens, then fire-tail finches and honeyeaters.
