In search of Calcutta in Kolkata

Calcutta took on the more suave avatar of Kolkata in 2001, but that did nothing to change our love for the city. The city of poet laureates, painters, and perhaps the best filmmakers of all time, Calcutta never changed to Kolkata for those with a love for arts. No wonder it was one of the muses for Satyajit Ray as well. And while you would know much about its famous Durga Pujo celebrations and revered artists, Kolkata as Calcutta still has traces if you want to go looking for it.

Calcutta trams
When in Calcutta, chuck your car. Taking an Uber might just work in Kolkata though, for Calcutta is old-school. Go slow, get aboard a tram, for Calcutta is not a city to rush through. More than a ride taking you through places, it will take you back in history for the city has seen epic changes. The only tram system to be running in the country now, Kolkata trams were started in 1902 and are perfect for a ride or two on a rainy evening.
Cabin eateries
Kolkata’s cabin eateries are the rarest of their kind; so rare that they might go extinct. The uninitiated should know that ‘cabins’ are private areas within a restaurant. In the days of yore, these were much preferred by traditional Bengali families. Sadly, most of these establishments are fighting hard to survive in today’s age of hip cafes and plush restaurants.

College Street Coffee House
It is hailed as one of the most famous branches of the quite popular brand, Indian Coffee House. The Coffee House was once the hub of city’s cultural happenings, and was started in 1942 at the behest of the Coffee Board. While its days of seeing Satyajit Ray are long gone, it still attracts Calcutta’s poets, writers, painters, singers and their kind. Coffee House is also the stage that saw inception of some of the most influential literary magazines that the country has seen.

South Park Street Cemetery
This cemetery is another gem on the Park Street. While it is being infamous and noted as one of the haunted sites in the city, you can visit the cemetary for a close encounter with history. It houses the tombs of Walter Landor Dickens (son of Charles Dickens), Captain Edward Cooke, and Maj General Charles Stuart among other notable figures. It also houses Grave 363, famous for having no name and just an epitaph that reads, “A virtuous mother (died 1825).” Most of the tombs have a very clear impression of the Gothic school of architecture. An early-evening walk in the cemetery will certainly take you closer to Calcutta’s heart in Kolkata.

Dakshineswar - Belur Math ferry
While Belur Math needs no introduction, those with a historical bent of mind would know that the Dakshineswar Kali Temple, built in 1855, is one of the most scared and ancient seats for the followers of Hindu Goddess Kali. You can add a touch of spectacular to both the attractions by taking a ferry ride that connects both. Rides are scheduled every hour from 7:30 AM to 7 PM, on the stretch, taking you across the calm waters of Hooghly river.

Other than these, a few hours must be spent in roaming down the Park Street. Plus, in exploring Bollywood’s obsession with a ferry around the Howrah Bridge. These are memories that you will cherish for long, of a history that is never to be found in school books.
