This vast icefjord runs from the Greenland Ice Sheet to the town of the same name, Ilulissat. Its main claim to fame is that at its eastern end is the Jakobshavn Isbræ Glacier, the Northern Hemisphere’s mot prolific dumper of icebergs into the ocean. They break off in massive chunks, up to a km in height and float along the fjord, often only to become trapped in the shallow mouth. 25 to 30 m of glacier sheave off each day, so the fjord is often pretty filled with icebergs which are gradually broken up and forced out into the ocean by more icebergs breaking off behind them. They then float off, not disappearing entirely until they get about level with New York. One of the most spectacular frozen landscapes to visit and admire because of all the creaking, cracking action you can expect to see there.
