Though most of the islands dotted around Cochin are accessible via roads (due to the latest infrastructure developments), there was a time when they could be reached only by a ferry/boat. Frequent ferries still run between the mainland and the various islands, and also between the islands. It was the only mode of transport until a few decades back, and still has a quaint charm to it. Pleasing sea breeze, lovely skyline of the mainland, floating sea weeds, frolicking sea gulls and the gorgeous Vembanad Lake are sure to enchant you en route your visit to Kochi and other islands. Frequent ferries still run between the mainland and the various islands, and also between the islands. It was the only mode of transport until a few decades back, and still has a quaint charm to it. Pleasing sea breeze, lovely skyline of the mainland, floating sea weeds, frolicking sea gulls and the gorgeous Vembanad Lake are sure to enchant you en route your visit to Kochi and other islands.Ferry rides are a much better experience than hiring a boat for a ride on Vembanad Lake, which could comparatively be more expensive. Also, to travel like a local on the ferry is not that one gets to experience in most cities across the country. A jankar ride (a ferry where your vehicles can also be boarded) from the mainland to Kochi is a must try.
