A visit to Kumbalangi, a model rural village gives an insight into the life of toddy tappers, fishermen, coir making industries and much more. This fishing hamlet is located south west of Kochi, close by Vembanad Lake. It has been transformed into an Eco-tourism village, the first of its kind in the country. Initiated by Kerala tourism board, this model rural village also helps locals make a living out of tourism. Kumbalangi is separated from the waters by mangroves and has numerous Chinese fishing nets encircling it. During their vacation, visitors can also try their luck in fishing and understand various methods of fishing.Prawns, oysters and crabs are also bred here in numerous farms. Other popular activities in Kumbalangi include a canoe ride through the backwaters and a walk through the village and its paddy fields. The people of Kumbalangi are friendly folks, and are very hospitable and warm. Kalagramam, which is an artist’s village, has a wide range of handicrafts and fishing equipments on display. With numerous home stays, it is recommended to spend a day in Kumbalangi while visiting Cochin.
