This winter, the people in Delhi and those coming to Delhi by air might be caught by a surprise. As per the reports, the Hindon Air Force station could be used by regional flights during the winter months, in order avoid congestion in Delhi Airport. Aviation Secretary Mr RN Chaubey recently announced that the Indian Air Force has agreed to the proposal.

This initiative would allow passenger planes to take off from the Hindon Air Force station to tier 2 and tier 3 cities under government’s connectivity scheme. The air force station that is based close to Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh will probably be soon open to civilians. GMR Infrastructure Ltd has also been notified regarding the same for seeking approvals. Although no airport is supposedly permitted to operate within 150 km of Delhi Airport, Chaubey says that he is hopeful that the GMR would agree to this new arrangement. According to news sources, the government is in talks with Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). The rule of 150 km currently restricts the Hindon project becoming a success.

So, fingers crossed for this one, Delhi really does need another airport.
