Viewed from the outside, the black basalt and red sandstone structure, designed by Sir Charles Lanyon and inspired by the cutting-edge design of London’s Pentonville Prison, is dramatic to say the least. The adept guides, as they lead you through the frisking rooms to the inmate cells, brim over with stories. One learns that through period of intense political conflicts, the gaol witnessed several bombings, breakouts and protests. The deeper you go into the restored wing with its ornate railings, staircase and rows of cells, the more you cease to be passive observer. The sight of the hangman’s noose leaves everyone’s eyes widen with horror. Outside, in the large backyard, the unmarked graves invite quiet contemplation.
