City of Athens Museum

The City of Athens Museum is a place where keen heritage travellers can take closer look at the string of events that took place in the 19th century and at the same time, gain knowledge on how Athens used to be at the time and how it transformed itself over the years. The museum is built within two interconnected historic buildings that once belonged to King Otto, who lived there from 1830 to 1846. One of the most impressive parts of this museum is its extensive collection of royal furniture and antiques. Apart from that, there are age-old paintings by famous artists from the past and personal mementos belonging to important members of the erstwhile royal families. There is a model showing how the city of Athens looked in 1842. Also, a massive painting in this exhibition shows how the city used to look before it was destroyed by the Venetians in a war in 1687. The second floor of the museum hosts temporary exhibitions from time to time.
