Around 3000 pelican couples, families of swans, cormorants, spoonbills and egrets galore live amongst the maze of reeds and channels of the vast Danube Delta. The water is nutrient rich by the end of its long journey and provides a safe and abundant environment for waterfowl to raise their young. Baby birds poke their bills out from the forests of reeds and other birds build vast nesting colonies and take turns patrolling the extremities.
The best way to see the delta is by a small boat, which allows bird spotters to approach birds slowly and stealthily. In addition to the enormous bird population, the Danube Delta is home to muskrats, beavers, wolves, raccoon dogs and European mink. There are also numerous species of tortoise, snakes and lizards.
