Sprawling over 1350 acres of land, the Banaras Hindu University is not only one of the largest residential educational institutions in India but also in the entire Asian continent. Established in 1916, the university is an ensemble of four institutes, 14 faculties, over 140 departments and has over 20,000 enrolled students from more than 34 nations. Located in southern Varanasi, near the banks of the Ganga River, the iconic buildings in the university campus were built in the Indo-Gothic style of architecture, and are connected by a network of tree-shadowed roads.
