For a truly Canadian wilderness experience, you can't beat a trip to Algonquin Park, the jewel in the Ontario provincial park system. It's a massive wilderness area of pristine beaches, lakes, campgrounds, rivers, forests and trails, about a 3 or 4 hour drive north of Toronto. Algonquin captures the essence of a Canadian summer, where nature, sunshine and joy meet.
You don't have to be an experienced camper or canoeist to enjoy Alognquin. You can motor along the 56-kilometre stretch of Highway 60, the ’’corridor’’, stay in a lodge or campground and enjoy many of the park's recreational amenities. Take part in extensive Natural Heritage Education programs or visit Algonquin’s Visitor Centre, Logging Museum and Art Centre. On Thursdays in August, join the “Public Wolf Howl,” a highly engaging program on wolf ecology that includes howling for wolves. At the other extreme, you can rent a complete outdoor kit from a local outfitter, including canoe, and journey into the heart of the park, where you will see only the majestic moose and hear only the cry of the loon.
