For those seeking a little peace and quiet, the headquarters of the Theosophical Society at Adyar are a perfect retreat. The society was founded in 1875 by Madame Blavatsky and Colonel Henry S Olcott with the aim of promoting universal brotherhood, and had famous followers such as the nationalist leader Annie Besant. Situated south of the Adyar river, the sprawling 108 acre complex is dotted with gardens and tree-lined pathways that make a pleasant stroll. It also houses Christian, Buddhist, Islamic and Hindu shrines, and has a large library of books on religion and philosophy. Don't forget to stop by at the sprawling 400-year-old Adyar Banyan Tree.
