The Shree Jagannath Puri temple is one of the most impressive monuments in the state, and is dedicated to Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe and an incarnation of Vishnu. Constructed by King Ananta Varman Chodaganga Deva of the Ganga Dynasty back in 1198, the temple enshrines Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Balabhadra. The main temple of Jagannath is an imposing structure surrounded by two walls. Within, the 58-metre-high sikhara (spire) is topped by the flag and wheel of Vishnu and guarded by two stone lions and a pillar crowned by the Garud. Built in the Kalinga style of architecture, Lord Jagannath is believed to be the symbol of Universal peace. Every year, the hugely popular ritual of Rath Yatra concludes at the premises, during which thousands of devotees throng to the temple.
