Chowk

This lively bazaar is located in the heart of the city, and has its own distinctive ambience. It is lined with old mosques, havelis, which serve as reminders of a bygone era. The narrow alleys surrounding the central square have shops selling traditional crafts such as silver jewellery, ‘tussar’ silk, Chanderi saris, beadwork, embroidered and sequined velvet fashioned purses and cushions. The Chowk is also an excellent place to sample local delicacies like ‘kebabs’, ‘biryani’ and ‘mithai’. The Jama Masjid is located in the middle of the market. This red sandstone building was constructed in 1837 by Qudsia Begum, and is notable for its glittering gold-spiked minarets.
