The Arsenale

The Venetian Arsenal (in Italian, Arsenale di Venezia) is a complex of historic shipyards and armories that formed the heart of the Venetian naval industry from the thirteenth century. The Arsenale was founded in 1104 and was the greatest medieval shipyard in Europe, a large vessel could be constructed here in just one day.
Visiting the Arsenale should give you more understanding on the importance of Venice’s naval power. The Arsenale has been renovated and remains an impressive sight, where you can see the dry and wet docks, old storehouses, cranes and an old tower where huge ships were fitted with masts. It is an incredible industrial archeology site that unfortunately is only rarely seen as it is not open all the time, only during certain annual events and festivals including the Biennale; it is worth a visit if your timing is right.

However, even when it is not hosting the Biennale when you visit, the impressive main gateway entrance with its lion and neptune statues brought from Greece can be admired from the outside and you can also visit the nearby Museo Storico Navale, a naval history museum, all year round.
