The river Garavogue flows almost in the middle of town and is crossed by a little bridge. Opposite bridge sits a most important monument to Yeats―a stylized bronze statue of the poet inscribed with lines from his poems. It stands majestically in front of Ulster Bank on Stephen Street. The statue depicts Yeats in a rather flamboyant mood and haughty air, a far cry from what he appears in any of the photographs of the poet that are usually visible. And yet, it is a completely captivating statue.
