Porta Portese encompasses a lot of what Trastevere is about. While it’s quite a magnet for visitors, that hasn't stopped it being a working market and the place for locals to pick up anything from kitchenware to underwear.
In between the cut-price life practicalities and a few tacky "Made In China" souvenir stalls, you'll find the stuff of real interest: vintage Italian leather handbags, antique candelabras and 70s film posters. This isn't the most glamorous or fashionable of markets, but it is energetic and fun. With all that shopping fervour, don't forget to notice the actual porta. Built in 1644, it's actually quite impressive.
