Parrot Island: A lesser-known paradise in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are among the most stunning beach destinations in India. The place is brimming with some stunning natural wonders and unexplored mysteries. When it comes to offbeat destinations, there’s no dearth of such places in Andamans. And one such lesser-known wonder here is the incredible Parrot Island.
Let’s find out some interesting facts about this spectacular island:
How to reach
First question first, how to reach Parrot Island? To visit the island, one will have to take a small open boat as the government hasn’t started any particular water transport services yet. These dinghy boat services can be availed from the Baratang Jetty. It’s a magical boat ride that lasts for 30 minutes and goes through a wondrous creek.
Mangrove forest
The island features a different variety of mangrove trees which look to be evenly shaped. You’ll think it’s a man’s work but no, this is done by a huge number of parrots that visit the island at different hours of the day. The salt water of the forest is home to crocodiles so make sure you stay away from the water!
The legend
The island is a paradise for birdwatchers. Baratang locals believe that a group of five parrots visit the island every evening and inspect the whole region. Soon after, hundreds of parrots come here and settle down in the forest for the night.
Birdwatching
Besides parrots, visitors will also get to see a large flock of parakeets, the incredibly beautiful multi-colored birds which are also considered the most beautiful birds on earth.
Mystery behind the name
There is a reason why the island is known as Parrot Island. Apparently, every day more than a hundred parrots visit the island and trim these mangrove trees in a unique shape. They stay on the island overnight and complete the work and leave in the morning.
Best time to visit
The best time to explore Parrot Island would be winter through the beginning of summer. Rest of the time, the island faces tropical storms which might cause issues.
