Wong’s Place

If you’re a true night owl and going home at 2 am when most bars in Bangkok close seems like wasting the night, head over to Wong’s Place. Everyone who feels that it’s still too early to go home gathers there. Have a beer from the communal fridge and take a moment to really feel this legendary place’s vibe. Since its opening in 1987, it hasn’t changed much. Music is played from one of thousands (literally) of old VHS tapes that have been donated over the years by countless backpackers stopping by. Red Chinese lanterns cast a dim light on the myriad photos of guests covering the walls of the entire place. Wong’s Place is a meeting spot for an incredibly diverse crowd. Locals, backpackers, expats, gays and the occasional socialite come together here. The one rule to follow here is that every guest must be holding a drink—at all times! If you don’t and Wong catches you, be prepared for him to give you a hard time…over the microphone…in crude language. This might seem a bit rough, but it’s just another thing that makes this place so weirdly special and an absolute must in the Bangkok bar scene.
