Contestaccio

Contestaccio, as the name itself suggests, is located in one of the most popular nightlife areas or Rome, the district of Testaccio, where many disco clubs and fancy restaurants battle every night to attract the crowds of youngsters. Contestaccio is lying on one side of the “Monte dei Cocci”, a small artificial hill built with broken pieces of Roman Amphorae thousands of years ago, basically an “historical landfill”.While not in the historical center, Contestaccio is at walking distance from Piramide metro station.
Compared to our previous selections this club is more of a mainstream option, representing a heterogeneous fusion of a Restaurant, a Cocktail Bar and a Live Stage. But it’s no doubts for the latter that it became popular among Romans. Its’ main focus in fact is the promotion of new talents, not focusing on any particular genre: rock, funk, electronic and acoustic are all equally represented.

It often offers free entrance to its concerts, but the disadvantage is that you’ll usually have to wait till midnight for the music to begin.
The structure has an unfailing basement atmosphere, with temporary artistic exhibitions decorating the dull walls. The bar and the stage are housed in one of the “caves” and the dining room of the restaurant on a similar adjacent grotto. The somehow claustrophobic interior find an extension on the exterior staircase, reinvented as a terrace during summer, where also restaurant meals are served.
