There are two reasons you’ll find yourself returning to Fat Gut’z—their speciality, the fish ‘n’ chips, and the live music courtesy a wide range of nightly bands. Started and run by Australian restaurateur Ashley Sutton (who also runs the hugely popular bar The Iron Fairies just down the street), Fat Gut’z offers guests an international experience in the heart of Bangkok. The décor—mood lighting, dark wood panels, and a cosy atmosphere spread across two floors—is decidedly non-Asian, the food menu sports a limited range of finger food—the oyster, squid and aforementioned fish are most popular, and the drinks—concocted by mixologist Joseph Boroski from New York—include 16 innovative cocktails (the Junyo Maru is an unlikely mix of Irish whiskey, cucumber and honey, while the Lancastria uses candy floss along with vodka, Sauvignon Blanc, lychee and lemon) in addition to the usual bar stock. However, it’s the ambience here that really scores with patrons. A vintage-style speakeasy, the bar on the ground floor (occupying space under the stairs) transforms into a stage every evening, with the in-house band performing Blues from 9 every evening till midnight.
