Rooftop restaurants in Mumbai are expected to see a steady increase in numbers across the city soon, thanks to a new set of rules and regulations in place. Till now, things like a romantic candlelight dinner in Mumbai and that too in a rooftop restaurant was something that was a difficult proposition. This was mainly because there were very few restaurants, cafes and eateries in Mumbai due to some restrictions in place. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now made changes to its rules and regulations with regard to rooftop restaurants, thus, making way for new ones to come up. However, there are still a few conditions applied to it.

Till date, BMC imposed a ban on the opening of restaurants on the rooftops of hotels and buildings under certain circumstances, thus, leading to the existence of only a few of such places in the city. But now, BMC has allowed opening of such establishments with conditions that the restaurants should be built within an area of 1.5 m around the rooftop, and also there shouldn’t be a residential building in a 10 m radius around the rooftop. Besides, the conditions also state that no gas stoves or cooking setups will be allowed in these restaurants as a safety measure. This means that the rooftop restaurants will have to manage with electric or microwave cooking.

In spite of lifting the ban on the opening of rooftop restaurants, BMC has introduced these conditions and restrictions so that the environment around remains safe and free from all kinds of related trouble, thus, ensuring peaceful living of the residents around.
In a city like Mumbai which is blessed with pleasant evenings for most part of the year, rooftop restaurants can offer a great place to chill for the city’s residents and, at the same time, give a further boost to Mumbai’s tourism which already revolves a lot around the popular food scene of the city.
