Word to the wise: Make sure to use NTD 100 or NTD 500 to pay the fare as drivers often lack change. A new law requires passengers to wear seatbelts or face a hefty fine.

Hailing a yellow taxi from any street corner in Taipei is relatively quick and easy, except during rush hour and rain storms when there is more demand. All taxis run on metres, which begin at NTD 70. An NTD 20 surcharge is added after 11pm and during Chinese New Year holiday (mid-January to mid-February depending on the lunar calendar).

Drivers speak very little English so make sure to have the address written in Chinese or hand the driver the business card with the Chinese address on it. Calling for a taxi from the main dispatch service entitles passengers to a small fare discount.
