Revere Beach

America's first public beach - where sand-sculptors and sun-worshippers flock
Noteworthy for: A crescent-shaped, three-mile stretch of beach, Revere is easily accessible by the subway and offers city folk a bit of sand and surf.

It's crowded on weekends, and the seagulls are among the most aggressive in the world, but Revere also allows travelers a taste of the New England coastline, which is moody, dramatic, and even violent, especially in winter. In the summer, quiet walks on the beach are less likely, as the salty ocean breeze attracts the masses in search of relief from the muggy city.
In the 1980s, a renewal and redevelopment plan restored the late 19th century pavilions and bandstand and also re-sanded and widened the beach itself, providing the perfect canvas for the annual sand sculpting festival.

Restaurants and snack bars line the beach, with Kelly's being the favorite among locals and fans of roast beef sandwiches, of which Kelly's claims to be the creator. Also popular are their fried clams and lobster rolls.
