We’re getting used to the idea of turning abandoned buildings into fascinating architectural masterpieces. The ION Hotel in Nesjavellir, Iceland was conceptualised by Santa Monica based design studio Minarc. They aimed at creating 'a hotel experience as dramatic and otherworldly as the natural Icelandic surroundings', and the hotel’s location on the rocky slopes of Mt. Hengill affords stunning views of Lake Thingvallavatn and the surrounding mountains.
Built using built with prefab panels and incorporating sustainable materials, the Ion Luxury Adventure Hotel respects both creative ideas and the surrounding landscape in terms of construction, panoramas and accommodation. A holistic approach to the whole project resulted in creating a powerful connection between the inspiring man-made destination design and the unequalled wonders of the Icelandic wilderness. Eco-responsive features were employed within the hotel’s luxuriously intimate spaces, mirroring the surrounding natural beauty. Staying at this luxury hotel is enhanced by the connection to hot springs and glaciers defining the area, as well as unforgettable views of the playful Northern Lights.
