Horta Museum

The home of one of the Art Nouveau movement's main leaders

Word to the wise: Since so many buildings in Brussels take inspiration from Art Nouveau design, it's a good idea to visit this museum at the beginning of your stay.
Towards the end of the 19th century, Brussels was at the forefront of the Art Noveau boom across Europe. Belgian architect and designer, Victor Horta was a leader in this eclectic movement and this museum is the house and studio in which he lived and worked for 20 years.

Characterised by iron and glass beautifully formed into floral and geometric decorative motifs and curved lines, the signature designs of Art Nouveau can be found throughout Horta's house and studio, in its stained glass windows, mosaics, murals, mirrors and fabulous staircase.

Although various biographical documents are exhibited, it is the house itself, along with the permanent displays of furniture and decorative pieces designed by Horta and his contemporaries, that is the main draw.
