The home of one of the Art Nouveau movement's main leaders
Word to the wise: Since so many buildings in Brussels take inspiration from Art Nouveau design, it's a good idea to visit this museum at the beginning of your stay.
Characterised by iron and glass beautifully formed into floral and geometric decorative motifs and curved lines, the signature designs of Art Nouveau can be found throughout Horta's house and studio, in its stained glass windows, mosaics, murals, mirrors and fabulous staircase.
Although various biographical documents are exhibited, it is the house itself, along with the permanent displays of furniture and decorative pieces designed by Horta and his contemporaries, that is the main draw. You can also pick up a guide to other notable Art Nouveau buildings in the city from the museum.
