Hill forts of Rajasthan for the fans of heritage and all things grand

When we say that the Aravalli Range is a treasure trove of unique experiences, we don’t just mean the natural side of things. Located in the Aravallis in the state of Rajasthan, is the series of Hill Forts of Rajasthan, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. This group of hill forts was declared a world heritage site in 2010.

Officially called the Hill Forts of Rajasthan, the site is spread across the cities of Chittorgarh, Rajsamand, Sawai Madhopur, Jhalawar, Jaipur and Jaisalmer.

This massive fort, located on a hill, was the capital of Mewar. Here, you will find 65 historic structures comprising temples, water bodies, memorials and victory towers. The fort is easily one of the largest forts in India.

Also known as the Great Wall of India, the Kumbhalgarh Fort is one of the largest fort complexes in the world. The fort is located just 48 km away from the city of Rajsamand.

Located inside the Ranthambore National Park, the fort is one of the main attractions of the national park apart from the big cats. There are many theories as to when and who constructed the fort. All we know is that the fort gives an incredible view of the Ranthambore National Park.

Ever heard of hill and water forts… Now you have. Gagron Fort is a great example of hill and water forts. Gagron Fort is the only fort in North India that’s surrounded by water. It was built by the Rajput king Bijaldev Singh Dod.

Also called Amber Fort, the fort is located in the town of Amer, just 11 km from the city of Jaipur. The fort is one of the best examples of Rajput architecture. The fort is a popular feature of the Jaipur itinerary.

The fort was built in 1156 AD by the Rajput king Jaisal. It is one of the most stunning forts in India. Did you know that some of the old city’s population still reside within the fort complex? This makes Jaisalmer Fort one of the few living forts in the world.
