Hamilton Pool

One-of-a-kind swimming hole with gorgeous and strange flora
Noteworthy for: The tropical-looking scenery and cool, clear water will make you forget the Texas heat.

Hamilton Pool looks like it belongs in Hawaii instead of Central Texas. A 50-foot waterfall flows over lace-like maidenhair ferns hanging from the remains of a collapsed grotto. Depending on recent rainfall, the waterfall may gush or trickle, but the water level in the pool below remains fairly constant. Snorkelers can see interesting rock formations and fish about 15 feet down, including large catfish and carp.
The area around the pool is dominated by towering bald cypresses - distinctive-looking trees that survive in flooded areas by growing roots above-ground that resemble knobby knees. The preserve is also protected habitat for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler.

The park's status as a nature preserve means that amenities are minimal. There's a composting toilet near the parking area, but you'll need to bring your own water and snacks. The 'beach' next to the pool is rocky, so bring something cushy to sit on.
