Lala’s Art Café is functional is an old Sankar Monastery Labrang, which was saved from demolition in 2006 and turned into a gallery-cum-cafe serving the old town. It now serves as a small platform to Ladakhi and international artists as well as shutterbugs to showcase their art. A nine-foot tall granite statue of the yet-to-be-born Buddha, Maitreya, stands at the front of the café. The first floor of the building is a Ladakhi residence, while the upper floor serves as a café. Power up with something from the fresh-squeezed-juice bar or bury your face in one of their endless varieties of Ladakhi cuisine. If you can’t decide what to get, spring for the homely burger with freshly brewed coffee. With offerings like Butter chai, Khambir with butter, hot or cold chocolate, juices, quiches, pastas, varieties of Tsampa mixed with cheese and butter, you won’t leave hungry, for sure.
