Huen Phen

One of the most popular joints to sit down to a hearty Northern Thai meal is Huen Phen in Chiang Mai’s Old City. For many first time travellers in town, this may also very well be the place where they’re first introduced to northern Thai food. Go for the khao soi, arguably Chiang Mai’s most famous dish and well worthy of the title. Yellow egg noodles are covered in a creamy, spicy curry then topped with fried wontons, pickled greens, chopped shallots, lime juice and roasted chili sauce creating a unique flavour combination you’ve never tasted anywhere else. The dish usually comes with chicken but many places will give you the option of pork, beef and vegetarian as well. While khao soi isn’t a sharing dish—you’ll want the whole bowl for yourself anyway—most Thai dishes are, so pick a few other items from the menu to try out and taste test your way through some local favourites. This restaurant is especially popular during lunchtime, with a quick and casual feel, so to miss the crowds, try going in the late morning or late afternoon. In the evening, move past the canteen eating area of the afternoon and enjoy your meal in the more atmospheric dining room toward the back of the restaurant.
