DID (Dine in the Dark)

With more Dining in the Dark restaurants cropping up in hip cities throughout the globe, DID isn’t unique to Bangkok—but it’s certainly one of the city’s more memorable dining environments. Essentially, DID is all about eating in total darkness. Patrons are even required to leave their phones and any other tech gear at the door to ensure no light gets in. This creates the rare experience where people eat without any interruption from technology. Meanwhile, DID’s excellent waiters—who are either blind or visually impaired—impressively navigate their serving duties in pitch black without a hitch.
Before the meal begins, guests choose one of 3 set menus comprised of 4 courses each: Asian, Vegetarian, Western, or Surprise. Diners aren’t told what the menu consists of, purposely left in the dark as to what they’re eating: the lengthy meal becomes a guessing game. Removing one’s sense of sight heightens other senses like smell, touch, sound, and taste—it allows you to appreciate the food more than usual. Afterward, guests are shown images of what they ate. Located at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in sophisticated Sukhumvit, an evening at DID makes for a great end to a day of shopping at boutiques, gallery-hopping, or looking at temples.
