Characterful, old-fashioned boozer

Word to the wise: On the last Monday of the month the pub hosts a ukuelele night, which can be silly good fun.

Located in a easy-to-miss courtyard off Dame Street, this Victorian watering hole is a model of a traditional Irish pub, having retained most its original features - carved mahogany fittings, partitioned booths, tiled floors, stained glass - and laying on regular live music sessions.

Unsurprisingly, it's popular with the tourists who manage to find it, as well as the city's student contingent; less expected is the fact it serves rather good food. This is a characterful place to accompany your pint with an Irish stew or a plate of bacon and cabbage, or go all fancy with a tuna melt.
