The Colosseum was constructed during the Flavian dynasty under the emperors Vespasian and Titus. Back then, it also came to be known as the Flavian Amphitheatre. This colossal amphitheatre was built on the site of Emperor Nero's extravagant palace.


Fun fact: The Roman emperor Nero was one of the most infamous emperors of the Roman Empire. He was most famous as one of the most ruthless rulers and also the one who made a name in the world of debauchery. When the Colosseum was built on the site of his palace, it was built as a reflection of a new era. It was an arena for public spectacles, gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, and theatrical performances.

The Colosseum's architecture, a blend of innovative engineering and aesthetic brilliance, which could accommodate up to 80,000 spectators at a time. There were complex system of corridors, tunnels, and elevators, allowing for swift and efficient movement of people, animals, and props.
