Nepal’s Khumbu region is an all-important region for all those who are already in the process or plan to explore the areas in and around Mount Everest. Also called Everest Region, Khumbu is where you end up before embarking on your journey to Everest.

Khumbu region is located on the Nepal side of Everest. Namche Bazaar, the gateway to the Himalayas, is located in this region, and is an important point in your journey forward. All trekkers make Namche Bazaar their halt for altitude acclimatisation.



The Lukla Airport is also located in Khumbu. If you are flying in, this is where you land. Lukla Airport or Tenzing-Hillary airport is the nearest airport to Everest. From here, you trek for approximately 62 km to reach the Everest Base Camp. It is also the world's most dangerous airport!



We must also talk about Sagarmatha National Park when we talk about the Khumbu region. Sagarmatha National Park is spread across an area of 1,148 sq km, and is home to the world’s highest mountain Mount Everest. The national park was added to the list of UNESCO Natural World Heritage Sites in 1979. Other than Mount Everest, there are more than 40 mountains inside the national park, including the Kala Patthar and Ama Dablam.



Khumbu region trek will take you to several Sherpa villages. These villages are literally the highest mountain villages in the world as they are located so close to Mount Everest. That’s not all, Khumbu Glacier, the world’s highest glacier is also one of the region’s most important attractions.


It is safe to say that Nepal’s Khumbu region is home to some of the most unique attractions in the world.
