Village of Grasmere

Located in the center of Lake District, this tranquil village derives its name from the adjacent lake. Poet William Wordsworth lived here for 14 years and described this place as one of the loveliest places ever. Lying alongside River Rothay that flows into Grasmere Lake, this village is the starting point of a number of popular walking tours including the Alfred Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk. Popularly known as the garden village, this colourful place is vibrant and known for its postcard panoramic beauty. It is an extremely popular tourist destination and home to numerous gift shops, pubs and cafes. Wordsworth's grave in the yard of St. Oswald's Church is a significant place to visit. Apart from Wordsworth, Grasmere is synonymous with the famous Sarah Nelson’s Gingerbread Shop. Located just off St. Oswald's church, the shop is named after Sarah Nelson who started making utterly delicious ginger bread in 1854. In fact, Grasmere Gingerbread is a registered trademark today whose recipe is well guarded (in fact tucked away in a bank vault!) and passed down through the generations. The shop sells the truly delectable gingerbread and also some of the most beautiful and well crafted souvenirs. The collection of their absolutely adorable and creative teapots is not to be missed!
