India is up against yet another cyclone that is currently forming in the Bay of Bengal. Cyclone Nivar is expected to hit the southern part of the country. The states currently on alert are Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, alongside Puducherry, which is a Union Territory. Reports suggest that Chennai is going to get a lot of rain during the event.
Cyclone Nivar’s expected landfall
The cyclone is expected to cause rainfall in Chennai, Puducherry, Cuddalore, and Villapuram.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, a low-pressure in the Bay of Bengal that is closer to the Tamil Nadu coast is expected to intensify into a depression, and this is what will cause the cyclone. It is currently moving towards the coast at 18 kmp speed.
Currently, respective state governments have placed departments such as police, forest, health services, rural development, disaster management, and revenue on high alert. Moreover, fishermen have been asked to return to shore. There is also the concern of officials that the cyclone might deviate from its path, in which case, the Nagapattinam district will be at risk.
