From the European parliament to a comic book trail to a traditional brewery, there is a wealth of attractions in Brussels. Considered to be one of Europe’s most beautiful squares, the Grand Palace (also a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is the centre of the city. A visit to the European Parliament provides a glimpse into the workings of the European Union, while grand churches such as the National Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula are specimens of breathtaking architecture. The city’s light-hearted side is reflected in the Mannekin Pis, a status of a urinating boy that has become the symbol of Brussels, and the Comic Art Trail, in which you can see beloved local characters such as Tintin and Asterix come alive on murals across the city. History buffs must head to the historic battleground of Waterloo nearby.
