There's a Korea in India and it's waiting to be explored

Nestled in the north-western region of Chhattisgarh state, with its administrative hub situated in Baikunthpur, this district boasts a legacy that stretches back through the annals of time. Korea district serves as a living testament to the intricate weave of history and biodiversity found in Central India.
Before the 16th century, scant information about this area existed, rendering it virtually unknown. Historically, Korea emerged as a princely state during the British colonial era, alongside Chang Bhakar, both standing as prominent regions within its domain. With the dawn of India's independence in 1947, the rulers of Korea and Chang Bhakar acceded to the Union of India, subsequently integrating into the Surguja District of Madhya Pradesh state.


Korea stands out as a lesser-explored gem in India, shrouded in mystery beyond its association with a somber historical event. In 1947, Maharaja Ramanuj Pratap Singh Deo of Korea made headlines by tragically shooting down three of the last Asiatic cheetahs, marking the final sighting of these majestic creatures in India. This regrettable incident casts a shadow on conservation endeavors, emphasizing the critical importance of safeguarding wildlife.



It’s been quite some time since that incident and we have come so far in terms of conservation and nature appreciation. Today, Korea District boasts remarkable natural treasures. Guru Ghasidas National Park, formerly part of the Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve, is a must-visit destination. Spread over 1,500 km2, this park is named after Guru Ghasidas and is renowned for its biodiversity. The park shares tiger populations with neighbouring Madhya Pradesh and serves as a vital conservation area.

In 2000, Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh, leading to the establishment of Guru Ghasidas National Park within its boundaries. This area is characterised by diverse ecosystems, including Sal, bamboo, and mixed forests, and harbours a plethora of flora and fauna.



Korea is also famous for its lush greenery and a number of waterfalls and other natural attractions. The forests of Korea embody a diverse and captivating ecosystem, contributing significantly to the state's natural heritage. Teeming with biodiversity, they provide a sanctuary for a myriad of plant and animal species, fostering a delicate ecological balance. Beyond their ecological importance, Korea's forests hold cultural and recreational value, offering scenic landscapes for exploration and opportunities for eco-tourism.
