If you have an extra day on hand, a visit to the City of Derry, the only remaining completely walled city in Ireland, is highly recommended. You don’t need to be a specialist in Irish history, to relish a dramatic walk along the fine 1.5 km in circumference city walls (now a unique promenade from which to view the layout of the original town). The walls were used as defences for the 17th century settlers from England and Scotland. If you want to go deeper into history, the Tower Museum with its litany of artefacts on display—from geological formations to a city sword, to a permanent exhibition of an Armada shipwreck—will take you back through time. Other things to put on your to-do list include a walk down the Peace Bridge, and a visit to Saint Columb’s Cathedral, the first building built after the reformation. Read less
