When was the last time you rode on a giant Ferris wheel? Childhood nostalgia comes alive at the Prater, Vienna’s famous amusement park, which boasts of the 212-ft tall Riesenrad―a landmark in Vienna’s skyline. The Ferris wheel was constructed in 1897 and it was the world’s tallest until 1985. The Riesenrad has featured in iconic movies filmed in Vienna, especially the British film noir ‘The Third Man’ and the cult classic ‘Before Sunrise’, where a pivotal scene was shot inside one of its red and white gondolas (carriages). If you’re celebrating a special anniversary, book a romantic candlelight three-course dinner in the Riesenrad’s Crystal wagon. Apart from the Ferris wheel, there are old-fashioned merry-go-rounds, roller coasters, Punch and Judy shows, ghost trains, flight simulators and more – some 250 attractions to keep you and the kids entertained. There are several cafes and restaurants, snack stands, ice cream carts and beer gardens, where you can savour some Viennese specialties in food and drink. Right next to the amusement park area lies a meadow and forest area, known as Green Prater, which is most popular with walkers, runners and bicyclists. There’s also a Madame Tussauds wax museum in the Prater. The Prater is best visited from March to October, though the Riesenrad and some other attractions are open year-round.
