Toronto is considered one of the world's most multicultural cities. Waves of immigrants have poured into the city over the past 100 or so years, many staking out neighbourhoods and creating a new-world version of their homeland. Spadina Avenue was once the centre for the Jewish population in Toronto, but in more recent years has been almost completely overtaken by Chinese immigrants, mostly from Hong Kong.
The good news for locals and visitors is that they brought all of their time-honoured recipes with them, and also import many key ingredients. In Toronto's downtown Chinatown (there are other Chinatowns in the suburbs), you will find some of the best food outside of Hong Kong, which itself is a foodie heaven. Visitors from India need to leave behind Indianised ideas of Chinese food and get ready to taste the real thing. Arrive hungry, enjoy the bustle, and don't be shy about sitting at a big, round plastic-covered table with other diners.
