Bylakuppe is located on the Mysore-Madikeri Road about 85 km to the West, just outside Kushalanagar is Bylakuppe, possibly South India’s largest Tibetan settlement. You know you’ve arrived at this little village from the multi-coloured triangular flags or white flags fluttering in the wind. The people too are noticeably distinct and have settled here for a few decades now. The village comprises mostly agricultural patches but more popular are a handful of Buddhist monasteries established here. The most popular, spectacular and eye catching is the Namdroling Monastery with giant statues of the Padmasambhava. Time the visit for one of the prayer times when the whole monastery reverberates with chants and rhythmic ringing of bells. Wander around the village as well and shop for locally made Tibetan handicrafts and woollens. Also taste some delicious Tibetan fare such as momos and thukpa, a traditional noodle soup.
