Kashmir airfares soar – travelling to Bangkok is cheaper than Kashmir

Winter airfares in India are at an all-time high, especially Kashmir airfares. According to reports, the Jammu and Kashmir government had raised objections regarding the surged airfares for Kashmir charged by agents.
Apparently, the airfares for Kashmir are currently so high that flying to Bangkok is cheaper for Indians when compared. Even flying to Kabul and Dubai is currently cheaper than flying to Kashmir. At this moment, if you go online to ticketing agents with the intention of flying to Srinagar one week from now (Feb 15, 2019), you will be asked to pay INR 11,012 for one way. On the other hand, flying to Bangkok on the same day is costing travellers only INR 6,870 for one way.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Srinagar, J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik spoke to the PM about the rise in airfares.


This hike in airfare has caused travellers to think twice before flying to Kashmir. This is a serious issue especially because the winter season causes roadblocks, and flights are the only mode of transportation for Kashmiris. The state has, in fact, received heavy snowfall over the past few days, and this has caused closure of the Srinagar-Jammu highway.

As per the sources, tourists are also cancelling their visit to Jammu and Kashmir due to the maddening rise in airfare. Seems like we can now only wait for the winter to subside and ticket prices to drop in the coming months.
