House of Blackheads

The House of Blackhead originated in the 14th century as a guild made up of Riga’s merchants and craftsmen who were joined by a brotherhood of banquet caterers called the Blackheads. Most were of German descent, and they banded together to protect their trading rights from the efforts of pirates and robbers. The brotherhood eventually married into Riga’s patrician elite and rose in importance until it was one of the greatest forces in the city.
The House of Blackheads was rebuilt in 1999 after being destroyed in a bomb raid in World War II. It is currently home to the President of Latvia while the Riga Castle is under construction. The building is breathtakingly beautiful with an intricate and colourful facade. This is Latvian artisanal craftsmanship at its finest; the murals of the Conference Hall, crystal chandeliers, weaponry and armour sets, stained glass, and the Blackheads Coat of Arms.
