Dating back to the 9th century, Rezekne is a quiet provincial town dotted with historical sites. World War II changed the course of history, when over two-third of the town was destroyed and its Jewish community was almost completely wiped out. The Green Synagogue stands as a testament to this chapter of its history and is currently under the process of restoration. Castle Hill provides an attractive view of the town as well as some old ruins of the Livonian castle. Many beautiful churches exist here, most notably the Heart of Jesus Cathedral and Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church. The 15-minute walking tour down Pulkveza Brieza Street from Evangelical Lutheran Holy Trinity Church will take you through a beautiful rural neighbourhood and back to the castle hill. If you’re interested in hiking or camping, Rezekne serves as a perfect start to such a trip. It also serves as a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside. Besides, do plan a trip to Razna National Park that lies just south of the town and can be reached by bike or on foot.
