St. Peter’s Basilica is one of those religious centres that make you feel tiny, almost like an ant, as soon as you step inside and this enormous yet breathtakingly beautiful church attracts some 20,000 visitors every day. The massive bronze Baldachin, brilliantly sculpted by the great Bernini is housed inside St Peter’s Basilica, so is Michelangelo’s celebrated creation, the Pieta. Arguably, Michelangelo’s best artistic achievement, the extraordinary dome of the Basilica, stands tall at 119 m. This iconic church also serves as a burial place for Popes including the great St. Peter. It is extremely difficult to decide over the façade and the interior as both are equally stunning. For those who are interested in visiting the noted dome, a small lift takes you some 320 steps away from the same. Do remember that ‘modest’ dressing is essential and your knees and shoulders should always be covered. Entry is denied to those not adhering to the rules.
You do not have to pay a fee in order to get into the world’s most popular church. Queuing outside St. Peter’s Basilica is an absolute waste of time as once you’re done seeing the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, you will inevitably come out to the Basilica. Located on St. Peter's Square, it is 800 m away from the ‘Ottaviano San Pietro’ metro station and is open from 7 am to 7 pm. Visit during noon in order to avoid the maddening crowd.
