St Nicholas Church

As eye-catching as St Thomas Church is the St Nicholas Church which goes back to the mid 12th century. Built originally in Romanesque-style with extensions in Gothic style in the 16th century, it is a sprawling structure with a towering spire which saw many performances by Johann Sebastian Bach. Inside, the church has beautiful pillar details, arched ceiling, a lovely altar and a painted ceiling over it. Dominating the interior is a massive organ. However, the church is more famous for its political association and for being the location of the famous Monday Demonstrations in 1989, where a peaceful revolt was organised to overthrow Communist Rule. In the square adjacent to the church, there are little plaques on the ground as well as a massive pillar topped with details that resemble the pillars inside the church which has been erected as a monument to commemorate the revolt.
