St. Anthony's Church

Catholicism was introduced to this island-nation by the Portuguese. But, the Dutch persecuted the missionaries. It was under the British that religious freedom was protected. One of the premier catholic shrines in Colombo is the St. Anthony's Church. Believers flock here in large numbers, with prayers on their lips and rosaries in hand.
The church that looks like a typical Portuguese church was built on the site of a former mud chapel. Legends abound here of the miracles of the powerful and gracious Saint Anthony. And even though it is a catholic place of worship, people from all religions come to pay their respect. Some come in search of healing, others to thank the Gods, still others to ask for material blessings. Whether their wishes are granted or not, they come away with a sense of peace thanks to the serene vibe within the church.
